Open beta testing on the Windows PC began on November 1st 2012, with 200 aircraft and 600,000 players. Players can unlock vehicles either using in-game currency earned through play, or through purchases with real money. The three available game modes are Arcade, Realistic and Simulator, offering differing levels of realism to suit player preference. Vehicles are split into three main categories: aviation note with further subdivision between helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, ground, and fleet note with further subdivision of the latter between bluewater ships (destroyers up to battleships) and coastal vessels (torpedo boats, motor gunboats, frigates, etc.). The game also incorporates other nations through "sub-trees", branches of main nation research trees dedicated to them, or with premium vehicles for example, the UK has a tree for South Africa's armoured vehicles, and China has a tree for vehicles used by the Republic of China/Taiwan. Over time the ground, air and naval forces of these nations were gradually added, along with those of France, Italy, China, Sweden, and Israel - as of writing, the ten main factions of the game. The game involves all five of the major aircraft players in World War II: the United States, Nazi Germany note and further down the tech tree the forces of West/modern Germany, Imperial Japan note and further down the tech tree the forces of the Japan Self-Defence Force, United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union note and further down the tech tree the forces of the post-Soviet Russian Federation.
